Neil’s Story: Through Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis and Back Again

About three years ago Neil Krige was diagnosed with Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH). This disease affects the liver, and occurs in people who drink little or no alcohol. Known as a ‘silent’ liver disease, NASH can only be diagnosed through a liver biopsy. If the biopsy shows fat, and inflammation and scarring of the liver, NASH is diagnosed. Six months ago, blood tests revealed extremely high levels of liver enzymes and cholesterol indicating that Neil’s condition was deteriorating.

There is currently no specific treatment or ‘cure’ for NASH and Neil was faced with a very difficult lifestyle decision to make, “I needed a change in lifestyle; I had been warned on many occasions to do this but lacked the strength of character to see it through. My doctor had told me that changing your lifestyle was more difficult than giving up smoking.” Neil registered with Lisa Raleigh Cpt before it opened officially and began a detox programme with food-state vitamin supplements and an exercise routine, which comprised training six days a week. He admits that making a lifestyle change was tough, and that the support he received at the clinic helped him to cope with the mindset shift and commitment required.

Six months into his programme Neil has lost weight and is healthier than ever, he comments, “the most incredible result was that my liver enzymes were dramatically reduced and my cholesterol came down to normal levels. The results so impressed my liver specialist that I only have to visit him every twelve months to monitor progress.” Neil’s attitude towards his body has changed, and he has committed himself to a completely healthy and conscious lifestyle.

Lisa Raleigh Clinic Cpt endorses a holistic approach to general wellness and weight loss and makes recommendations based on nutrition, fitness and exercise, emotional triggers and the individual requirements of the client. The clinic also offers full emotional support for its clients through SMS, Skype, email and/or telephone calls. The clinic’s facilities include: a private gym, a wellness centre offering body wraps, cellulite treatments, massages, lymph drainage and colon therapy, as well as a Fruition Cafe and Juice Bar which serves low GI, low calorie meals and green juices.

  1. What a load of garbage. Neil Krige might consume very little or no alcohol these days but that can't be said of previous years. The past catches up.

  2. Hi Rita
Neil conceded that his lifestyle was in need of a change- part of his recovery process was a nutrition and exercise 'overhaul'. Surely people are entitled to make changes- surely this is part of our personal growth? His courage and resilience is commendable; many people collapse under health pressures and having to change the only way of living they know.
Medically-speaking NASH, non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis, occurs most frequently in people who don't drink at all, or who drink little alcohol. You have to realise that it is never too late to try and fix your health- and people have a right to make changes and enjoy their lives, even if they have made mistakes in the past.
